Boulder City, Nev. -- Head coach Tim Swanson had been waiting for his North Dakota men's golf team to play up to its potential. Well, his Fighting Hawks did that and more during a record-setting run at the Big Sky Championship this week.
"I'm just really proud of this group of young men," Swanson said. "I knew what they were capable of doing on a golf course and they picked the right time to play their best.
"They were an extremely motivated group this week and to finish the season by breaking the records that we did was a special way to close things out."
Led by senior captains Aaron Pulanco and Jacob Dehne, UND established a number of Division I records during the 54-hole tournament that concluded Sunday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
For starters, UND finished with an 885 (+21) team total, which was 23 strokes better than its previous mark of 908 set earlier this season at the Colin Montgomery HBU Husky Invitational.
Pulanco and Dehne along with junior Daniel Sayler all shot even-par 72's during the final round to help the Fighting Hawks break their 18-hole team score with a 290 (+2). The previous record lasted only two days after the team opened the event with a 292 on Friday.
Pulanco's even-par round put his 54-hole total at 220 (+4), which was a career best for the Maplewood, Minn., native. He opened the tournament with a 71 (-1) and finished in a tie for 15th, while Dehne was only one stroke off that pace. The Bismarck native finished at 221 (+5) after making four birdies in his final collegiate round.
Sayler also had a record-breaking run in Nevada, shooting a career-best 72 in the final round to establish a 54-hole personal best at 222 (+6). Sayler led the Fighting Hawks with 12 birdies at the championship and also had the team's lone eagle in his opening round.
Freshman Jeremy Kirk put together his best 54-hole score of his rookie season, finishing tied for 31st at 227 (+11) and Jack McClintock opened and closed the tournament with a pair of 74's. He made four birdies in his closing round.
Idaho won its second consecutive Big Sky men's team title after surging past Sacramento State with a final round 271 (-17). The Vandals entered the day trailing the Hornets by four strokes, but put four players in red figures to blitz the eight-team field.
UND wound up in seventh place, moving past Southern Utah thanks to the fifth-best team score of the day. Hartford finished third and was led by medalist Evan Russell, who held off a pair of Vandals to win the individual title with a 206 total (-10).
