GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Junior Zach Muckenhirn was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 11th round of the Major League Baseball draft Saturday. His selection is the highest among UND baseball players in history.
Muckenhirn started his junior season off with a bang, shutting out then-12th-ranked Southern California with a three-hit gem, piling up nine strikeouts in the 1-0 victory. He earned national player of the week honors for that performance. The Delano, Minn., product would punchout a dozen Alabama batters a week later, going eight innings without allowing an earned run. He fanned a career-high 14 in just 7.1 innings at Sacramento State and would record at least eight strikeouts in eight of his 13 starts, leading the WAC in Ks with 99 against just 14 walks. His career strikeout total stands at 200, fourth-most in school history.
The Delano, Minn., native was an All-WAC Second Team selection this season. He becomes the second MLB draftee from UND in as many seasons, following the Colorado Rockies' selection of Tyler Follis in the 28th round of last year's draft.
