GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team took down St. Cloud State by a score of 2-1 to in exhibition play on Tuesday evening at Bronson Field.
Senior forward Zoe Foster led the charge in the win for UND, scoring the game-winning goal and helping assist on UND's first goal scored by sophomore Katie Moller. The Fighting Hawks actually conceded the lead in the 13th minute of play, after a clearance attempt in front of the goal ended up in an own goal and a St. Cloud State 1-0 lead.
However, Moller and Foster went right down the field after the goal to tie the game up just 50 seconds later. Foster then went on to score the game-winner early in the second half, scoring in the 48th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Swenson started for UND, she made all three saves she faced from St. Cloud State, but unfortunately had the own goal credited against her. Freshman keeper Catherine Klein has put herself in position to compete for the starting job in net, as she went on to make all three saves she faced in the second half to keep UND on top.
While earning the win against the Huskies was satisfying, North Dakota entered the exhibition against St. Cloud State, and the exhibition against Manitoba last Saturday, with more of a scripted-practice mentality.
In the match against the Huskies, UND head coach Matt Kellogg tried different pairings and lineups in the midfield and on the backline; partly due to early bumps and bruises from preseason training and some to see how different players mesh together during in-game situations.
Besides the early miscue in front of the UND net which resulted in the own goal, the North Dakota back line did a good job of limiting St. Cloud State's chances on net for the rest of the game.
With the match marking the final preseason test, the Fighting Hawks will now play for keeps as their season begins this Friday against Northern Iowa back at Bronson Field. Kick off against the Panthers is slated for 4 p.m. (CT).
