GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team found itself on the wrong end of an explosive first half, as the visiting North Dakota State Bison scored four goals in the first 45 minutes of play to claim a 4-1 win over the Fighting Hawks on Friday afternoon at Bronson Field.
With the loss North Dakota now moves to 1-4-1 on the season, while NDSU improves to 3-2-0.
The Bison got on the board early, scoring in just the eighth minute of play off the foot of Holly Enderle. In the 26th minute, Enderle scored again to put NDSU up 2-0.
However, sophomore forward Katie Moller answered right back within less than a minute to cut UND's deficit in half. Moller collected the ball on top of the 18-yard box and fired in a shot along the near post that beat NDSU keeper Monica Polgar. The goal was the first for Moller on the season and also the first UND goal scored at Bronson Field this year.
Unfortunately for North Dakota, NDSU's Enderle struck for a third time, completing the hat trick in the 33rd minute to put the Bison up 3-1.
As the first half was coming to a close, North Dakota State added a fourth goal in the 44th minute to take a three-goal lead into halftime.
The Fighting Hawks regrouped at the break and came out with much stronger pressure. After being out-shot by the Bison, 10-8, in the first half, UND went on to out-shoot NDSU, 6-4, in the second half. UND placed two more shots on net, but Polgar made the stops to keep the Fighting Hawks from starting a rally.
Polgar would finish with four saves for the Bison, while on the opposite end of the field UND's keeper Catherine Klein recorded three saves in the contest.
North Dakota returns to the field next weekend with an Illinois road trip, taking on Western Illinois Friday, Sept. 9, and Illinois State on Sunday, Sept. 11. The game in Macomb, Ill., against the Leathernecks is slated for a 4 p.m. (CT) start.
