GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks women's basketball team dropped a 74-71 decision in overtime vs. Montana State on Thursday night at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
UND (9-7, 4-1 BSC) drops its first game in Big Sky play and suffers its first defeat in six games. The loss also marks only the second time the Fighting Hawks have tasted defeat in their last 18 regular season conference games.
Makailah Dyer's desperation 3-point attempt at the overtime buzzer was halfway down, but just rimmed out as the Bobcats (11-4, 4-1 BSC) held on for the win.
North Dakota rallied from a 12-point deficit, and were led by Samantha Roscoe's first-career double-double as the senior scored 12 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and swatted away six shots for the Fighting Hawks. She now has registered 11 blocks in her last two contests.
MSU was led by reigning co-Big Sky Player of the Week, Peyton Ferris, who scored a game-high 32 points, including six of MSU's eight points in the extra frame.
North Dakota had successfully rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit, tying the score at 47-all with just under three minutes left in the third period. The run was punctuated by a Jill Morton jumper then a three followed by a pair of free throws by Lexi Klabo.
MSU immediately answered with five quick points and held a four-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. UND once again had a solid fourth with a 9-0 run boosting the home team in front, 62-57. Dyer, who had 17 fourth-quarter points in last Saturday's win, had seven in this run to spark the offense and give North Dakota its largest lead.
The Bobcats would get a three by Hannah Caudill and a Riley Nordgaard bucket to knot the score again at 64-64. Then the teams' senior leaders would battle with big shots. Ferris scored to put the Cats back in front then Dyer had the counter with 37 seconds left.
UND's defense stood tall in the closing seconds, sending the game to overtime. In the extra session, MSU held North Dakota without a field goal and were forced to score all five of their points from the free throw line. Conversely, the Bobcats got a Caudill jumper with under a minute to go to make it 72-70. UND split a free throw pair on the other end for a one-point Cats' lead then Ferris knocked down two free throws with 4.4 seconds left. On the game's final play, Bailey Strand's in-bounds pass was deflected into the hands of Dyer, who stepped through a defender and launched a long three that nearly went in and the Bobcats grabbed just the second road win in the all-time series between the schools in Big Sky Conference play.
UND returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Montana Lady Griz-- who have not won in conference this season-- invade the Betty.
