BOZEMAN, Mont.-- North Dakota notched its 20th overall win, the ninth time in the last 10 years, with a 3-0 win at Montana State Friday in Big Sky Conference play. The win helped UND shake free from a brief two-match skid as it improved to 5-2 in league play.
Sophomore Ashley Brueggeman charted a match-high 13 kills in the win on just 25 swings with only a single error (.480 hit percentage). Senior Sydney Griffin recorded a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs while Faith Dooley had eight kills and nine blocks for the Fighting Hawks.
North Dakota outblocked the Bobcats, 14-2, on the evening and out-hit the home squad, .230 to .120.
"Tonight the team did a great job of following the game plan," UND head coach Mark Pryor said. "We served efficiently so that gave us some great opportunities when they had to turn the ball over to us. Defensively we were much more locked in, and it showed."
Brueggeman killed a half-dozen balls on just seven swings in the opening set to guide North Dakota to a 25-21 victory. UND hit .189 in the set as a team and only got more efficient as the match wore on. The Fighting Hawks hit .205 in the second then finished the win with a .297 clip in the third.
North Dakota only tallied 12 attack errors for the entire match while the Bobcats had 28 attack errors, 14 of those coming on UND blocks. Dooley was in on nine of those, four in the final frame alone to up her league-leading block total to 129 on the season.
"It's really nice to see Ashley Brueggeman developing into a go-to hitter for us," Pryor said. "She's only a sophomore, and she's been getting better and better each week."
UND (20-4, 5-2) heads to the University of Montana for a Saturday evening battle. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m.
Notes: UND has now won 20 or more matches in each of the last five seasons and nine of the last 10 seasons ... Brueggeman hit .480 for the match (13 kills, 1 error, 25 attempts), a personal match-high ... Griffin now has nine double-doubles this season, tied with Tamara Merseli for the team lead ... North Dakota improves to 10-2 all-time against MSU, including nine straight wins ... UND has dropped just three sets combined during this nine-match winning streak.
