MISSOULA, Mont.-- North Dakota dominated host Montana Saturday evening in Big Sky Conference play, hitting a season-high .423 with just seven total attack errors in a 3-0 sweep. UND was paced by Jordan Vail's 11 kills while Faith Dooley added 10 as the Fighting Hawk middle hitters combined to hit .588 in the win.
"First of all, thank you to all the UND football fans who stayed in Missoula and came to our match. When our kids saw that, they were so pumped. That really means a lot for our program, and it means a ton to me personally," UND head coach Mark Pryor said.
"When we work hard mentally to pay attention to the serving game, as well as our ball security with our hitting errors, we can have matches like this," he continued. "When your setter and all five hitters all hit above .200, you are going to have a pretty strong chance at success."
North Dakota led for the bulk of the match with Montana only holding a 5-2 advantage in the first and a 7-3 lead in the second before UND went on sustained runs to garner control. In the first, UND flipped that 5-2 deficit into a 13-7 lead with an 11-2 spurt. At one point, Montana had five straight attack errors as the visitors took advantage. Dooley would register a half-dozen kills on just seven attempts in the first set as UND won, 25-16.
In the second, Montana (6-15, 1-7) again got out to the quicker start, grabbing a 7-3 edge. Again, North Dakota answered with a 10-2 run to re-establish control before taking the second set, 25-19. That frame would end on one of Vail's match-high 11 kills with six of those coming in the second set.
The third set was all Fighting Hawks as UND stormed out of the intermission with the first five points to prompt a Griz timeout. UND saw its lead balloon to as many as 12 in that set before eventually closing out the match with a 25-17 victory.
"It's eight weeks into a long season, and we have only been home for two weeks," Pryor said."We are excited about being home for the next two weeks. For us to be where we are record-wise, I'm really proud of this group. It's been a long haul, and we've definitely had some scars along the way, but this group is learning and getting better. We can still make improvements, and I know this group is going to work hard to do just that."
UND (21-4, 6-2) will begin a four-match homestand next week, beginning Thursday evening against Idaho State on Midco Sports Network at 7:00 p.m. at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
Notes: North Dakota's seven attack errors marked the fourth time that UND has recorded single digits in that category this season ... It is the 21st time in Mark Pryor's tenure that North Dakota has managed that feat ... UND has not lost a set to Montana in their last seven meetings and has squandered just three sets in its 14-match winning streak over the Griz.
