GRAND FORKS, N.D.— Visiting Montana State out-lasted North Dakota in the fifth set to score a 3-2 upset, spoiling the Fighting Hawks' 20-match winning streak Saturday evening in Big Sky Conference play.
UND senior setter Sydney Griffin flirted with a triple-double with 56 assists, 10 digs and nine kills. Alivia Fraase had 25 digs in the loss while Jordan Vail had 11 kills and seven total blocks.
"It's unfortunate for the seniors that they have to go out with a loss on their senior night but they battled," UND head coach Mark Pryor said. "We beat them in every statistical category except the win column. It stinks. They've been great ambassadors for the University of North Dakota and they will be successful in anything they do in the future.
"No better way to get a bad taste out of your mouth than to play a ranked team (Monday at Iowa State). If you're going to wallow in self pity, you can get right back on the bus. It'll be good for us to hit the reset button."
North Dakota (24-5, 9-3 Big Sky) had the jump early, pouncing on the Bobcats for a quick 25-14 win in the opening set. UND held the Bobcats to just eight kills and a .000 hitting percentage in that frame. MSU (8-13, 4-8 Big Sky) responded with a 25-23 win in the second set to square the match at one set apiece. UND fought off multiple deficits to squeak out a 28-26 win in the third and had match point in the fourth at 25-24.
However, Montana State rallied to post a 28-26 win in that stanza and went on to record a 15-11 win in the decider to hand UND its first home loss of the season and just its second five-set loss of the season. The Bobcats hit .455 in that fifth set with 12 kills against just two errors in their win, just their third all-time against UND (10-3) and first since the 2012 season.
North Dakota has a quick turnaround and will step outside of conference play for the final time with a Monday match at 22nd-ranked Iowa State. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
Notes: North Dakota is now 9-1 at home this season ... UND had its home winning streak snapped at 20 with its last loss coming Sep. 3, 2016 vs. Texas Tech ... Faith Dooley, Sydney Griffin, Teodora Tepavac, Julia Kaczorowska and Tamara Merseli ... The four-year players in that group have combined for 97 wins at North Dakota so far ... Tepavac tied a career high with four service aces Saturday ... It was Griffin's 17th career match of 50 assists or more and fifth this season ... Dooley moved into third place all-time at UND in career kills (1,349) passing Devin Trefz (2008-11) ... Merseli and Griffin each notched their 12th double-doubles of the season.
