GREEN BAY, Wis.-- Coming into Friday's Green Bay Country Inn and Suites Invitational, UND knew it would have its hands full.
Drawing Cal Poly, who was just outside the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Top 25 poll this week, was a formidable team with a formidable team that includes a sister tandem that provided a stiff test defensively. The Mustangs proved all they were advertised, hitting .458 on the way to a 25-22, 25-17, 25-10 sweep of the Fighting Hawks Friday morning.
"We were just soundly beaten. There's no other word for it," UND head coach Mark Pryor said. "That team is light years ahead of us, not so much physically, but mentally. We have been very honest with our team about what needs to happen for us to be successful in certain matches. It's pretty evident that none of those things happened. The only good news is that we have a chance to begin the process of correcting those things soon."
There were nine tie scores and three lead changes in a tight first set. The Mustangs (8-2) broke free with a 10-3 spurt that turned a 12-10 UND advantage into a 20-15 Cal Poly lead that it would not relinquish. UND closed to 23-22, but the Mustangs held on for set one, 25-22.
In the second, a 4-1 start propelled Cal Poly in front early and later a 7-1 run provided the distance as the Mustangs grabbed the second set, 25-17. Cal Poly would hit .600 in the final frame en route to a 25-10 win.
North Dakota was paced by senior Faith Dooley, who killed 10 balls followed by Ashley Brueggeman who chipped in nine kills.
UND will get a chance to shake it off later tonight when it battles with host Green Bay at 7:00 p.m. Central. It is available on ESPN 3 here: http://www.espn.com/watch/_/id/3154699/north-dakota-vs-green-bay-w-volleyball
Notes: Lydia Rutten notched her first career start Friday ... She finished with three kills on 11 swings and a block ... Cal Poly was ranked fourth in the most recent VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major poll ... UND was 11th in that poll.
