GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- North Dakota head football coach
Bubba Schweigert announced three more captains for the 2018 season following Wednesday's practice, giving him five for the upcoming campaign.
Austin Cieslak,
Adam Stiner and
Andrew Zimmerman join previously-announced captains
Tanner Palmborg and
John Santiago to make up the leadership group for this season.
Cieslak has appeared in 32 games in his career, making a pair of starts last season at his defensive end spot. He finished the season with 23 total tackles, including 2.5 for loss. The Hazen, N.D., product recorded his first career interception in the road win at Portland State a season ago, kick-starting a finish to the season that saw him account for 14 total tackles in the last two games.
Palmborg was named third team All-Big Sky Conference last season after starting all 11 games at outside linebacker. He finished fourth on the team with 43 tackles, registering a team-leading 8.5 tackles for loss to go along with 2.5 sacks. A native of Princeton, Minn., Palmborg was a three-time Bky Sky All-Academic Team member.
Santiago is a preseason all-America honoree by a handful of organizations and rolls into the 2018 season already firmly entrenched in the UND record book. The Andover, Minn., native led the FCS during the regular season with 1,780 all-purpose yards and was second with an 161.8 all-purpose yards per game average in 2017. He was named first team All-Big Sky at running back for the third-straight season and goes into his senior campaign with 31 total touchdowns and over 3,000 yards rushing.
Stiner has held a reserve role on the offensive line and chipped in on special teams in his three seasons. The Fighting Hawks are 6-0 in games that he's contributed on the field but his leadership off the field stands out. Stiner was the UND Community Service Award winner last season after logging 40 hours of community service to tie for the most among UND's male student-athletes. The Verona, Wis., native volunteered for several organizations, including St. Joseph's Social Care, the SAAC Food Drive, Grand Forks Youth Football and more.
Zimmerman appeared in four games as a reserve quarterback in his sophomore season last year, going 21-for-41 for 339 yards and three touchdowns. He threw for 132 yards and his first collegiate touchdown at Montana, including a scoring strike against the Griz that went for a season-best 62 yards. The Monroe, Wash., product followed that up with 179 yards passing and two touchdowns in relief against Sacramento State a week later.
The five will lead UND onto the field one week from today at the Alerus Center against Mississippi Valley State for the season opener. The kick is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Midco Sports Network and the Home of Economy Radio Network.
