GR
AND FORKS, N.D. - With postseason implications on the line, the University of North Dakota women's soccer team will head South to Fargo to take on rival North Dakota State in the regular-season finale at Dacotah Field.
A Fighting Hawks win, or a tie will clinch the program's first postseason berth as an NCAA Tournament eligible program in the Division I era. As a transitioning athletic department in 2011, UND advanced to The Great West Conference Tournament championship game.
UND improved to 10-6-1 last weekend, recording its first 10-win season as a Division I member following a 5-2 win over Omaha. The Fighting Hawks opened the week with a 7-0 loss to Denver, pushing numbers forward in the second half to try and equalize the Pioneers.
With wind chill temperatures in the 20's and snow dusting across Bronson Field, the Fighting Hawks found itself down to its final goalkeeper,
Hallie Byzewski, as
Catherine Klein and
Madi Livingston were not suited. While the Mavericks took the early lead, North Dakota rallied back in the second half with five goals as
Megan Wright assisted
Ashley Ebeling's equalizer and claimed the game-winner in the 62nd minute.
Mara Yapello, who led the Hawks with four points on the day, netted the third goal and assisted on the final two as the Fighting Hawks held their position as the No. 3 team in The Summit League standings with a 4-3 record and 12 points.
Entering the final match against the Bison, North Dakota is four points ahead of NDSU and Oral Roberts, both of whom are vying for the fourth and final tournament placing. South Dakota is also in the mix with seven points in the standings.
While a win or a tie would secure North Dakota's place in The Summit League Tournament, a loss could also secure their postseason fate. A Denver win on Sunday over NDSU or a win by Purdue Fort Wayne or Western Illinois would send UND to The Summit League Tournament.
North Dakota State is 7-6-3 overall this season with a 2-2-2 clip in conference contests. The Bison are 3-1-1 in their last five home games and have one of the top goal scorers in the conference in Nebraska transfer Elyse Huber. Huber has tallied 10 goals and two assists this season but is goalless in her six Summit League appearances. Mariah Haberle and Brookelyn Dew have accounted for a combined five of the team's 20 goals in 2019.
The Summit League Tournament, hosted by South Dakota State, will begin Nov. 7 with the championship match on Nov. 9 at Fishback Soccer Park.
