Bangert's Last Minute Goal Lifts UND Past South Dakota, 2-1

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A mere 78 seconds after South Dakota tied the match 1-1 on a penalty kick, North Dakota's Emma Bangert slipped the game-winning goal past Coyotes goalkeeper Emma Harkleroad as the Fighting Hawks defeated the Yotes, 2-1.

The victory improved UND to 7-3-1 on the season and 1-0 in Summit League play while South Dakota fell to 5-7 and 0-1 in conference.

Despite cold, soggy and muddy conditions, the match was filled with plenty of excitement as both teams combined for 12 shots on goal and 32 total shots.

With the Hawks and Yotes figuring out their footing on the pitch, North Dakota was first on the board in the 22nd minute as Mimi Eiden muscled her way up the field. The junior held off two defenders and outpaced a third to rocket the ball into the net UND the early advantage.

South Dakota responded but was unable to equalize as Catherine Klein registered three stops in the opening frame. She would finish with four in the match.

In the 59th minute, a volley into the 18-yard box to Olivia Knox resulted in a penalty kick as the forearm of a Yotes defender stopped the ball. However, Harkleroad made the stop to keep it a one-goal match.

The Coyotes made multiple appeals for penalty kicks of their own in the 65th but were denied; sparking them to press the remainder of the match. USD earned a penalty in the 88th minute and tied the match as Alexis Mitchell converted her attempt to tie the match, 1-1.

Before South Dakota could settle their excitement, North Dakota worked its way down the field as Bangert collected the ball and put in the back of the net 78 seconds after USD tied the match.

North Dakota will return to action Sunday, Oct. 6, when it takes on South Dakota State in Brookings.
