Scheel backstops UND to 1-0 win at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--  Gavin Hain scored in overtime to break a scoreless tie while Adam Scheel stopped a career-high 41 shots as third-ranked North Dakota downed host Western Michigan, 1-0, Friday evening at Lawson Ice Arena.

No. 3 North Dakota (13-1-2, 6-0-1-1 NCHC) registered its third overtime win of the season and tallied its second shutout of the year with the win.

The second period tested North Dakota's penalty kill unit as North Dakota was whistled for four consecutive penalties, creating four chances, two of them in a 5-on-3 scenario. Scheel made 15 saves during those five power plays.

"Scheel was the difference tonight," UND head coach Brad Berry said. "Their guy was good, too, both goaltenders played an excellent game tonight, it was tough to get a goal past either one of them. There was a lot of time and space out there, so I thought it was a really good college game in the fact that two teams were going after it hard, a tight checking game and there were opportunities to score."

17th-ranked Western Michigan (7-6-2, 3-3-1-1) did have its chances with Scheel thwarting the best of them. The first one was on a breakaway chance in the first period that set the tone. In the second period, there were a pair of goal-mouth scrambles that somehow didn't produce a goal.

Hain's winner was setup by linemate Cole Smith winning a race to the puck in the corner to waive off an icing. Western couldn't get it out of the zone, though, as Hain caused a turnover near the wall, walked in the right circle and snapped a shot by Brandon Bussi's blockerside for the winner.

The teams will conclude the series Saturday evening at Lawson. It will be UND's final game of the first half before a return trip to Michigan for a Dec. 28 exhibition against the U.S.-Under 18 National Team in Plymouth, Mich.

Notes: Scheel recorded his fourth career game with 30+ saves … It was his second shutout of the season and third of his career … UND runs its unbeaten streak to 12 straight … UND now has three overtime game-winners by three different goal scorers (Westin Michaud, Jordan Kawaguchi, Hain) … North Dakota's penalty kill was 5-for-5 Friday (all came in the second period, including a pair of 5-on-3 chances) and is 52-for-57 (.912) on the season ... Grant Mismash led North Dakota with 5 shots on goal.
