NOTES: North Dakota preps for ranked Sam Houston State

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – NR/RV North Dakota returns home for the 54th annual Potato Bowl USA game on Saturday afternoon against No. 24/21 Sam Houston State. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. and can be seen live on MidcoSN, Fox College Sports, and Pluto TV.

This will be only the second meeting between the Fighting Hawks and Bearkats, with UND claiming last season's thrilling, 24-23 matchup at Bowers Stadium to snap the FCS' longest home winning streak at 21 games. The fifth-ranked Kats were the highest-ranked team that North Dakota has defeated in its Division I history.

UND has had plenty of success during Potato Bowl USA contests, claiming 41 wins in 53 tries to enter Saturday with a .774 winning percentage in those games. The game was created in 1965 by then UND Athletic Director Leonard R. "Len" Marti, head football coach Marv "Whitey" Helling, assistant football coach Jerry Olson, and sports information director Lee Bohnet. UND shutout Idaho State, 41-0, in the first game on Sept. 24, 1966.

After a showdown with the top team in the nation last Saturday, the schedule doesn't get any easier for the Fighting Hawks the rest of the way. UND does not play a team that is currently unranked or not receiving any votes in either the STATS or Coaches poll until Nov. 16 vs. Northern Colorado, including four currently sitting inside the top-10.
