Fighting Hawks Triumph in Sunday Night Thriller in the Desert

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Goals by Olivia Knox and Megan Wright and a second-half penalty kick save by Catherine Klein improved the University of North Dakota's winning streak to four matches as it defeated Grand Canyon, 2-0. The 6-1-1 start matches UND's best-ever start to the season in the Division I era, matching 2018's 6-1-1 record.

The Fighting Hawks struck first blood in the 10th minute as Knox received a ball from Sarah Doran and headed it home to give UND the early 1-0 advantage. Cassie Giddings looked to double the lead for North Dakota in the 42nd with a low shot to the corner of the net, but GCU keeper Lauren Garthwaite came up with the save.

After making an early save just over a minute into the match, Klein made two more saves the half as she made stops in the 33rd and 43rd minutes.

However, her biggest save of the night occurred in the 65th minute as she stopped Camryn Larson's penalty kick attempt after committing a foul in the box on an attacker in the 18-yard box.

Wright sealed the match for North Dakota in the 80th minute after Garthwaite committed a foul in the box, sending the junior to the spot to drive the penalty kick into the back of the net.

UND will hit the road next weekend when it heads to Idaho to take on Boise State (Sept. 20) and former Big Sky foe the University of Idaho (Sept. 22).
