NHL resumes August 1 with 16 total UND alums vying for Lord Stanley's Cup

Fourteen players and a pair of coaches from North Dakota are in their respective "bubbles" as playoffs get underway

The National Hockey League's Stanley Cup Playoffs officially get underway August 1 during the restart of play following the pause due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Twenty-four teams, located in two hub cities of Edmonton and Toronto, will vie to have their names etched on Lord Stanley's Cup.

The top four teams in each conference have advanced and will play a round-robin schedule over the coming week to determine seeding for the final 16-team bracket. The other 16 teams will faceoff in a best-of-five qualifying round to determine seeds five through eight in each respective conference's playoff bracket. UND can claim 14 players and a pair of coaches in the "bubbles" in the hopes of claiming a championship which will tentatively conclude no later than October 4, 2020.

Eighteen different UND products have hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup, most recently  T.J. Oshie and Shane Gersich in 2018 with the Capitals. UND has had a player on a Stanley Cup-winning team in seven of the last 10 seasons.
