CHICAGO -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team dropped a tight, 4-3 decision to Illinois-Chicago on Friday morning from the XS Tennis Center from Chicago.
UND (1-4) pushed the Flames (4-2) on nearly every court, but a three-set match on the No. 3 position proved to be the difference in the contest.
With lower roster numbers, the match was limited to just two doubles matches and five singles courts, with
Angela Georgieva earning a victory by default on the No. 6 singles court to give UND a 1-0 lead before the match had even started.
The Fighting Hawks made it 2-0 with back-to-back wins in doubles action, as the duo of
Sapir Sela and
Andrea Jansson cruising to a 6-1 triumph on the top court before
Allie Ochotorena and
Nina Zdravkovic cemented the point in two-person play with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot.
UIC answered back in singles play, however, posting three straight wins in two sets on the No. 1, 2 and 5 courts, but UND knotted the match at three at the fourth position. Jansson defeated her opponent, 6-1, in the opening set before rebounding from a 6-3 loss in the second with a 6-2 victory in the tiebreaker to turn all eyes to the No. 3 court for the match.
There, Sela jumped out with a 6-0 performance in the opening frame, but was dealt a 6-3 setback in the second to also send the contest the distance. In the tiebreaker, Sela couldn't complete the rally as UIC escaped with a 7-6 victory and a 4-3 triumph in the match.
North Dakota will jump right back into action on Saturday morning with a showdown against BIG EAST Conference foe Marquette.
