GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Two weeks after opening its outdoor season at Mizzou, the North Dakota track & field program will resume its outdoor season on Saturday, April 2, when it competes at the NDSU Spring Classic in Fargo, N.D. The meet will be the first of six straight competitions for the University of North Dakota leading up to The Summit League Championship at South Dakota May 13-15.
Admission is free, and attendance is not limited or restricted due to the track & field complex's ample spacing. Fans unable to attend the meet can follow via live results. Weather at the meet is forecasted to be breezy, with a high of 67 degrees and a low of 34.
Field events begin with the women's hammer throw at noon, and the men's javelin and women's pole vault at 1 p.m. Track events start at 3 p.m. with the 3,000m steeplechase and are expected to conclude by 6:30 p.m.
The Fighting Hawks season-opener in Columbia produced fruitful results for UND, who swept the first Summit League Athlete of Week awards of the outdoor season.
Chris Evenson and
Destinee Rose-Haas collected field athlete of the week accolades after recording then top-25 marks in the shot put and discus, respectively.
Evenson, who set a new school record with a toss of 58-10 to win the men's shot put, ranks 34th in the country, while Rose-Haas finished runner-up in the discus but ranks 21st nationally with her throw of 175-3. Rose-Haas also moved up to No. 6 on UND's top-10 in the hammer with her 182-3 mark.
On the track,
Luke Labatte and
Lucy Steinmeyer swept the track athletes of the week, with Labatte moving up to third all-time in the 5,000-meters with his sixth-place finishing time of 14:52.58. Steinmeyer also ranks in the top-50 in her discipline, clocking a 54.95 in the 400-meters to enter the weekend ranked 44th nationally in the event. She also won the 200-meters with a 24.63 to move into third all-time in the event.
North Dakota will return to action on April 9 and 10 for the South Dakota Challenge at Lillibridge Track Complex.
