OMAHA -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team rolled to a 6-1 victory over Omaha on Friday night to snap a two-match losing streak from Miracle Hill Tennis Center in Omaha.
With the win, UND (8-9, 3-2 Summit League) clinches a berth to the Summit League Tennis Championships in Denver beginning on April 30. It is the second time that the Fighting Hawks have advanced to the postseason since joining the league in 2018-19, with last season's championships not happening due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The visitors got off to a strong start on the doubles court, when
Andrea Jansson and
Sapir Sela picked up a 6-3 victory from the top court before
Isa Sullivan and
Kaede Amano cemented the 1-0 lead with a 7-5 triumph of their own at the third position.
Sullivan carried that momentum into singles play with a 6-0, 6-4 win on the No. 6 court to quickly extend the advantage to 2-0 and
Nina Zdravkovic pushed the match to its brink with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the fifth spot.
After Omaha earned a win to cut the lead to 3-1, the Hawks answered back with Jansson sealed the win by a 6-4, 6-2 score on the No. 3 court. Amano and Sela ended the match in style, each picking up wins in three sets to conclude the day with only one defeat.
North Dakota will head to Vermillion, S.D. for a showdown with South Dakota to close the regular season on Sunday at 11 a.m.
