Nelson and Evenson Wrap Up Day One at NCAA West Preliminary Round at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - University of North Dakota throwers Chris Evenson and Odin Nelson opened the NCAA West Preliminary round for the Fighting Hawks on Wednesday with both Hawks closing their seasons at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Both Evenson and Nelson finished 43rd in their respective events, and will cheer on teammates Erica Eades (800-meters) and Destinee Rose-Haas (hammer throw) tomorrow at Texas A&M.

Nelson opened the meet for UND in the javelin competition, throwing in the the first flight of the meet. The Minot, N.D., native marked 179-6 (54.73m) on his first attempt of the afternoon and closed his flight in 17th, and ultimately finished 43rd overall. With three years of eligibility remaining, Nelson is the first javelin thrower in the Fighting Hawks Division I history to throw over 200 feet.

Evenson, making his first NCAA West Preliminary round appearance since 2018, threw in the first flight of the men's shot put competition. After scratching on his first attempt, the Valders, Wis., native tossed 53-9 (16.38m) to make his mark on his second throw. Evenson took one last crack at besting himself but fouled his final attempt to improve his standing. Evenson also closed the meet in 43rd.

North Dakota will resume the competition tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 when Rose-Haas throws the women's hammer in the second flight.
