GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head men's basketball coach
Paul Sather announced the non-conference portion of the schedule on Wednesday afternoon. The slate, which features 12 contests, is highlighted by six home games against four Division I foes.
The 2021-22 campaign will begin on Nov. 9 against Milwaukee from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Panthers return to Grand Forks for the second time since 1977, and will bring McDonald's All-American freshman guard Patrick Baldwin Jr. for his first collegiate game.
UND remains home for a showdown against former conference rival, Montana, on Nov. 15. The two teams last met in Grand Forks on Feb. 1, 2018 when both were members of the Big Sky Conference and moved the Hawks to 5-5 all-time against the Griz at home.
The Sunshine State awaits over the next week, as the Hawks travel to Florida Atlantic for the Boca Raton Beach Classic on Nov. 19-21. UND battles host-Florida Atlantic for the first meeting in program history in the opener before taking on Troy on Nov. 20. The matchup between the green and white and the Trojans will mark the third all-time contest, with UND claiming the 2017 game in Hawaii. The Hawks close out the tournament on Nov. 21 against UT-Martin in the first meeting between the schools since 1980.
North Dakota closes out its week in Florida with a visit to Miami to take on Florida International on Nov. 24 in the inaugural contest between the teams before heading to Manhattan, Kan. for a matchup with Kansas State on Nov. 28. This marks the third all-time meeting for UND and KSU, with the last coming in 2015.
A quick trip back to Grand Forks awaits to close out the month of November against Presentation College on Nov. 30. The two have met four times from 2012-2017, with UND claiming each of the contests by an average of 33.5 points.
With the weather turning cooler, UND will head out to another coastal state, California, for a pair of contests. First, the Hawks will take on San Jose State on Dec. 3 in the first meeting since an 82-70 win by the Fighting Sioux in 1978 before heading to one of the newest members of Division I basketball, Cal Baptist, on Dec. 7 in the final road contest of the non-conference season.
Three straight at home close out the pre-Summit League slate in December, starting with a Dec. 11 battle with Eastern Washington in another tilt between former conference foes. The Hawks were nearly unbeatable against EWU at home, racking up wins in five of the six tries. North Central University comes to town on Dec. 14, a team UND defeated by 65 in their last meeting in 2019. Dixie State makes its first trip to Grand Forks on Dec. 18 to conclude non-conference play. The two teams met last season in St. George, Utah in the TrailBlazers' first game as a Division I program.
