Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – With adverse weather conditions forcing a time change and the cancellation of Monday's match at Nicholls State, the University of North Dakota (1-1) appeared unphased as it defeated Southern (1-2) at Jaguar Field, 7-0.
Bailey McNitt finished with a career-best two goals, while
Julia Briggs,
Taylor Preston, and
Allison Rapaduski scored their first career goals for North Dakota.
Due to Hurricane Ida and its Gulf Coast trajectory, the match with the Jaguars was moved to 10:30 a.m., while the weekend finale in Thibodaux, La., was canceled. UND will drive to Memphis following the match and travel back to North Dakota tomorrow morning.
The Fighting Hawks wasted little time against the Jaguars as
Lauren Glas opened the scoring register in the seventh minute, paving the way for McNitt's brace that gave UND the 3-0 lead. McNitt doubled North Dakota's lead in the 14th minute and struck again in the 26th minute to give the Fighting Hawks a comfortable lead.
After three goals in the first half, UND tallied four goals in the second half to give the Fighting Hawks their highest scoring output since Sept. 10, 2019, against Minot State when UND defeated the Beavers, 8-0.
Mara Yapello scored her ninth career goal in the 51st minute to open the scoring giving the Fighting Hawks their first goal off the bench in 2021. Rapaduski followed up in the 61st minute with her first career goal, which led to three UND goals in a 10-minute burst. Preston continued the stretch in the 66th minute, and Briggs closed the Fighting Hawks scoring tally in the 69th.
While North Dakota finished with 19 shots on goal, Southern placed six on frame, all of which were saved by
Madi Livingston in her 61 minutes on the pitch. Redshirt freshman
Abby Ellenberger made her first official appearance between the sticks in the final 29 minutes of action. The duo will combine for UND's first clean sheet of the season.
The Fighting Hawks will return to action on Friday, Sept. 3, when it hosts Bemidji State at Bronson Field. North Dakota will honor its senior class following the match with a Senior Day Ceremony.
