Late Burst Leads UP Past UND

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota played a strong opening half at Portland on Sunday afternoon, holding the historical power scoreless in the opening 61 minutes of the match. However, the Pilots (4-4) scored three late goals to down the Fighting Hawks, 3-0.

Madi Livingston made seven saves in net, while Irene Jirasevijinda registered North Dakota's lone shot on goal. In defense, JoJo Prisock, Taylor Lange and Mary Gasaway played the full 90 minutes against UP.

Fueled by a strong performance against Oregon State, UND opened the weekend finale aggressively, quickly taking two shots and earning a corner kick in the fourth minute of play. Freshman Julia Briggs took a crack at goal but the ball sailed wide for a Portland goal kick.

All told in the opening half, North Dakota played a physical 45 as it earned 10 fouls to the Pilots six and posted three shots to Portland's 12.

An awarded penalty was the difference in the scoreless affair as Taryn Ries snapped the scoreless tilt in the 62nd minute, burying the penalty. The goal opened the door for the Pilots offense, who scored in the 65th and 81st minutes. Eliana Wong, who scored the second goal of the match, dished an assist on the final goal.

The University of North Dakota will close its non-conference season on Thursday when it takes on Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn.
