MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team rolled to a 6-1 victory over Marquette on Friday night from Helfaer Tennis Stadium in Milwaukee, Wis.
UND (1-2) notched its first win of the season with victories in doubles play and on five of the six singles courts to blow past the Golden Eagles (1-2).
The Fighting Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in two-man play thanks to the top-two courts.
Gerhard Sullwald and
Nikita Snezhko started it off with a 6-1 victory at the top court before
Cian McDonnell and
Edmond Aynedjian sealed the advantage with a 6-2 triumph from the No. 2 position.
Snezhko and McDonnell kept it rolling in their singles matches, with the Iowa transfer notching a pair of 6-1 victories on the fifth spot while McDonnell added a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 3 court to push the lead to 3-0 and put the match within closing distance.
Dylan Leeman put the finishing touches on the first victory of the season for the green and white with a 6-1, 6-3 score on the bottom court, but the visitors weren't done.
Riley Odell battled to a 6-2, 7-6 triumph at the fourth spot before Aynedjian bounced back from a loss in the first set to claim the match victory with a 6-4 win in the second stanza and the tiebreak.
North Dakota returns to action on Saturday afternoon against Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. from Milwaukee.
