PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland (7-4) shot 56.7 percent in the game and North Dakota fell 90-69 inside the Chiles Center on Saturday night.
Five Pilots finished in double figures, led by Tyler Robertson and Kristian Sjolund with 18 points apiece.
Moses Wood recorded a double-double, netting 12 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
Mitchell Sueker paced the Fighting Hawks (5-5) with 15 points, while also corralling four boards.
A'Jahni Levias and
B.J. Omot were also in double digits, adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Portland made 56.7 percent from the field and was shooting over 60.0 percent until 6:30 left in the game. The Pilots also had eight makes from downtown and went 14-for-18 from the free throw line. Portland won the battle down low, holding advantages in points in the paint (52-34) and rebounds (37-28).
North Dakota hit 41.3 percent of its shots, added 10 triples and went 8-for-12 at the charity stripe. UND's bench outscored the UP reserves by a 39-37 margin.
The Fighting Hawks led 20-19 midway through the opening period after a layup from
Brady Danielson. After that point, North Dakota went over five minutes without a field goal and Portland went on a 10-0 run to build a 29-20 lead. Following two makes at the line from Omot, the Pilots went on another 7-0 run to lead 36-22 late in the half. At intermission, North Dakota trailed 44-30.
In the opening half, Portland made an even 60.0 percent of its shots, going 18-for-30 from the field. North Dakota went 12-for-31 shooting for 38.7 percent. The Pilots scored 30 points down low, while the Fighting Hawks had 16 points in the paint. Sueker and Levias led the Hawks at intermission with nine and eight points, respectively. Robertson was the top Pilot with 10 points.
Midway through the second half, Portland built its lead up to 20 at 71-51. Shortly after that point, North Dakota went on a 6-0 run to trim the deficit to 71-57 with 9:49 left. Danielson shined during the UND run with two makes in the paint and a steal.
That run would be the closest UND came to a comeback, with the Pilots building its lead up to 24 points at 88-64 with just over a minute left.
North Dakota will conclude its three-game road trip on Tuesday, playing Idaho in Moscow at 8 p.m. (CT). The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Home of Economy Radio Network.
