UND Leads League with 10 Hawks on MVFC All-Academic Team

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Ten North Dakota football student-athletes were named to the 2022 Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) All-Academic Team on Tuesday morning, the league offices announced. 

North Dakota led the league with 10 selections to the MVFC All-Academic Teams. North Dakota State was second with six student-athletes named to the list.

Nominees must be starters or important reserves; must have participated in at least 50 percent of his team's games and carry a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale). Nominees in graduate school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better both as an undergrad AND in graduate school.

Additionally, nominees must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. True freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible. Graduate students who are competing at a different institution than the one from which they earned their undergraduate degree are eligible even if they are in their first semester at the graduate institution. League sports information directors voted on the team by designating 11 players for first-team honors and 11 players for second-team honors.

Tyler Hoosman, RB, Gr., Plainfield, Ill., Academic First Team (3.710, Business Administration)
Saw action at running back in every game, starting eight of them … Piled up 1,023 yards on 176 carries for an average of 5.81 yards per carry … Scored 12 rushing touchdowns to rank No. 3 in the conference … Sat No. 3 in the MVFC in total rushing yards with 1,023 and was No. 3 in rushing yards per game with 85.25 … Had six 100-yard rushing games this season, including a career-high 147 yards in the 48-31 win over Missouri State … Second Team All-MVFC.

Ben McNaboe, DL, Jr., Rogers, Minn., Academic Second Team (3.866, Kinesiology)
Started all 12 games at defensive end … Ranked fourth in the MVFC in both tackles-for-loss per game (1.1) and sacks per game (0.54) … Led North Dakota in sacks with 6.5 … Also put down a team-high 13.0 TFL's … Entered the year as a fourth team All-MVFC selection by Phil Steele … Second Team All-MVFC.

Cade Peterson, P, 5th, Kewaskum, Wis., Academic Second Team (3.857, Mathematics)
Had 36 punts on the season for 1,436 yards … Averaged 39.89 yards per boot … Pinned teams inside their own 20 on 13 occasions … Had a season-long of 59 yards at both Nebraska and at Northern Arizona … Allowed three returns on the season … Recorded a tackle at North Dakota State … Broke North Dakota's Division I record for most punts in a career, now with 211 … Came into the year as a second team All-MVFC selection by both the conference and Phil Steele … Named Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 18 … Second Team All-MVFC.

Tommy Schuster, QB, Jr., Macomb, Mich., Academic Second Team (3.750, Operations & Supply Chain Management)
Started every game at quarterback … Ranks at No. 2 in the conference in completions per game with 20.92 … Also is No. 3 in the MVFC in completion percentage (68.8) … No. 4 in the league in total offense with 229.7 yards per game … 251-for-365 passing for 2,730 yards and 20 touchdowns while only throwing five interceptions … Cemented his place in North Dakota history as the all-time record holder for passing yards in a career (6,819), all-time completions (635) and Division I TD passes thrown (44) … Named MVFC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 14 … Honorable Mention All-MVFC.

Caden White, LB, Sr., Sun Prairie, Wis., Academic Second Team (3.976, Biology)
Started the first seven games at linebacker before going down with an injury … Sixth on the team in total tackles with 37 (26 solo, 11 assisted) … Recorded a season-high nine tackles (eight solo) at Southern Illinois … Put down a TFL at both Nebraska and against Missouri State.

Adam Zavalney, TE, Jr., Park River, N.D., Academic Second Team (3.936, Physical Therapy)
Appeared in all 12 games at TE, with 10 starts … No. 6 on the team in receptions with 20 for 183 yards, averaging 9.15 yards per grab … Scored three touchdowns this season and had a season-best four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown in the 29-27 win over Northern Iowa … Sits No. 6 in UND's Division I record book for career touchdown receptions with 10 … Entered the year as a fourth team All-MVFC selection by Phil Steele.

Ethan Ball, DB, So., Regina, Saskatchewan, Academic Honorable Mention (3.656, Environmental Studies)
Saw action in every game on special teams and as a reserve defensive back … Piled up 25 tackles (18 solo, seven assisted) … Put down a season-high four solo tackles at Southern Illinois.

Ben Christian, OL, Sr., Grand Forks, N.D., Academic Honorable Mention (3.711, Biology)
Appeared in every game as a reserve offensive lineman … His blocking late in games helped UND sit No. 2 in the league in time of possession, averaging 28:53 of clock each game.

Craig Orlando, DL, So., Verndale, Minn., Academic Honorable Mention (3.821, Kinesiology)
Appeared in every game as a reserve defensive lineman … Recorded 12 tackles and 0.5 TFL's … Racked up a season-high four tackles at North Dakota State … Had a half a TFL in the 42-7 victory at Indiana State.

Brady Stevens, K, Sr., Highlands Ranch, Colo., Academic Honorable Mention (3.500 Finance)
Kicked in every game … Went 45-for-45 on extra point attempts … Went 9-for-13 kicking, with his only misses coming from beyond 40 yards … Averaged 6.0 points per game to tie for No. 10 in the MVFC … Recorded 65 kickoffs for 3,696 yards and 21 touchbacks … Named the Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 2.

UND had 10 of the 39 student-athletes named to the MVFC All-Academic Teams and has claimed the MVFC All-Academic Award in each of the last two seasons.
