RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The University of North Dakota earned a victory against Columbia, 5-2, to end the weekend with a win.
Columbia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Fighting Hawks responded with five runs in the top of the second to secure the 5-2 win.
Jannay Jones pitched a complete-game victory. She allowed just six hits and two runs while striking out two to move to 3-6 on the season.
Columbia took the lead early with a run scored at the bottom of the first inning. The Fighting Hawks responded in the second inning.
Cassie Castaneda and
Madi Moore were walked to place them on base.
Callie Honig stepped up to bat and singled to right field to earn an RBI as Castaneda scored. Honig stole second to place her in scoring position.
Alexys Campos stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI double to bring in Moore and Honig.
Izzy Haslett tripled to right field as Campos scored for the Hawks fourth run. Haslett scored off a
Chevelle Sartin singled to left field. Columbia's pitcher struck out
Mariah Peters to end the scoring frenzy for UND.
Neither team was able to score as it became a pitching duel between the two teams. Jones and the defense kept Columbia off the board until the bottom of the seventh inning. Columbia added another run, but they were not able to surpass the Fighting Hawks who won 5-2.
North Dakota returns to action against CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, Mar. 16 for a double header.
