VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to South Dakota on Friday afternoon from the USD Tennis Courts in Vermillion, S.D.
With the loss, UND drops to 10-10 overall and 3-2 in Summit League play, sitting in third place with two matches remaining. The top-4 teams in the league standings advance to the Summit League Championships in Omaha.
Despite an early 6-2 win from
Charlotte Bowles and
Nore Heinitz on the No. 3 court, South Dakota notched back-to-back victories on the top courts to take a 1-0 lead after doubles play.
The Coyotes stretched their lead to 3-0 before
Allie Ochotorena got the visitors on the board following a win by opponent retirement on the third court. Heinitz kept her strong play rolling at the No. 4 position, picking up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 triumph to pull the Fighting Hawks within one, 3-2, with two matches remaining.
Both of those contests went to three sets, but it was the host-Yotes who came away with the pair of victories and the 5-2 match win.
North Dakota will close out its home slate next Saturday against Omaha at 1:30 p.m. from Choice Health and Fitness.
