SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon to close out the season in a winning style.
Despite the win, North Dakota will miss the postseason due to tiebreakers, but still finishes the 2021-22 campaign with an 11-11 overall record and 4-3 mark in Summit League play. This marks the third straight full season with at least four victories during conference action, the longest stretch in the program's Division I era.
UND jumped out to a 1-0 lead in doubles action, claiming wins on all three courts.
Andrea Jansson and
Allie Ochotorena started it off with a 6-0 shutout victory on the top court before
Charlotte Bowles and
Lucia Rizza clinched the early advantage with a 6-4 triumph on the third position.
Sapir Sela and
Nore Heinitz kept the momentum rolling towards the visitors by a 7-5 score at the middle court to close out two-person play.
Sela extended the lead to 2-0 for the green and white on the top court with a 6-4, 6-1 victory before Heinitz pushed the match to its brink by capturing the third point by a 6-3, 6-2 score at the No. 4 position.
St. Thomas clawed its way back into the match with a trio of wins, but Rizza clinched the contest with a three-set thriller. The freshman bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the opening set to post a 6-3 victory in the middle stanza and a 6-2 win in the tiebreaker to close the season out on a high note.
