Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team closed out a near-perfect day of tennis with a 7-0 win over Rider on Saturday evening from West Point, N.Y.
After taking down host-Army by a 6-1 score earlier today, UND improves to 4-0 following the sweep of Rider for the first time in the program's Division I era.
"The focus and killer instinct we showed today was overwhelming to our opponents," said North Dakota associate head coach Kyle Anderson. "Our level has been impressive, but the way we competed showed the guys are on a mission right now."
Once again, North Dakota jumped out to an early lead with dominant play in doubles action.
Cian McDonnell and
Edmond Aynedjian rolled to a 6-1 victory on the No. 2 court before
Drew Van Fossen and
Riley Odell capped off the two-man play with a 6-1 win of their own from the bottom spot to give the Fighting Hawks a 1-0 lead.
McDonnell kept his strong weekend going in singles action by cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the second position to extend the advantage to 2-0 and
Nikita Snezhko put the green and white into a clinching position with a 6-0, 6-2 trouncing on the No. 4 court to make it 3-0 UND.
Following a tough, three-set defeat earlier in the day, Odell bounced back with a strong performance in singles at the fifth position by registering the clinching point with a pair of 6-2 scores to seal the victory.
Petro Alex extended the advantage to 5-0 with his second victory of the day, 6-3, 6-0, before Aynedjian answered with a win of his own on the No. 3 court, 6-1, 6-3.
Gerhard Sullwald capped off the strong day of the tennis for the Fighting Hawks with a 6-1, 7-6 triumph at the top spot to close out the shutout.
North Dakota closes out the weekend against Colgate on Sunday at 8 a.m. from West Point.
