Fighting Hawks win seventh straight match, 7-0, over Gustavus Adolphus

Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team capped off another perfect weekend of tennis, defeating Gustavus Adolphus, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D. 

With the victory, UND extends its record start to 7-0 and improves to 2-0 on its home court after taking down Creighton on Friday and the Golden Gusties today, marking the fifth straight year that North Dakota has won its first two matches at home.

The Fighting Hawks remained perfect in doubles play on the season, bouncing back from a defeat on the No. 3 court to capture the point with a pair of 7-6 wins on the top-two spots to take a 1-0 lead. Nikita Snezhko and Gerhard Sullwald started the rally with a 7-6 triumph at the top position to stay unbeaten in two-person play before Cian McDonnell and Edmond Aynedjian also picked up a 7-6 victory from the No. 2 court to put the hosts in front. 

North Dakota extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on the top court from Sullwald and a 6-1, 6-2 win by McDonnell before Riley Odell provided the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at the No. 5 spot to put the Hawks up, 4-0. 

Gustavus Adolphus, who entered the season as the No. 17 ranked program in the country among Division III programs, put up a strong fight in singles matches, pushing a trio of contests to three sets. Jayho Hong picked up his first win of the season on the No. 6 court, splitting the first two sets before notching a victory in the tiebreaker. Aynedjian also bounced back from a defeat in the second set following a 6-3 win in the first to claim the three-set victory at the third position before Snezhko rallied after a 6-4 loss in the opener to claim a 7-6 triumph in the second and closed out the 7-0 score with a win in the tiebreaker. 

North Dakota returns to action next Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against St. Olaf from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.
