ELKHORN, Neb. -- The University of North Dakota men's golf team concluded a record-matching tournament on Tuesday at the Big O Classic, hosted by Omaha, from the Indian Creek Golf Course in Elkhorn, Neb.
As a team, the Fighting Hawks finished tied for third in the 14-team field and sitting just three strokes behind the co-winners Creighton and Omaha. UND's overall score of 881 (+17) matches the program's Division I record for the lowest 54-hole score, which was set last year.
Grayson Wetch put together his best tournament as a collegiate player, finishing tied for third overall with a personal-best score of 216 (E). The junior got stronger as the event wore on, firing a 71 in the second round before shaving another stroke off on Tuesday with a 70 to close out the tournament and card his first top-5 finish of his career.
Lucas Feterl, who was coming off his best performance last week, had another strong outing to place tied for 13th with a 220 (+4). The Maple Grove, Minn., native matched Wetch with a 70 in the second round to tie for the best round of the tournament by a NoDak golfer and paced all players with a -7 scoring average on par-5's.
Kagan Kollar sandwiched a pair of 73 scores between a tough second round, which ended as the only 18-hole score in the 80s, to finish tied for 31st with a 226 (+10) while
Nathan Peyerl made his UND debut with a 227 (+11) to tie for 36th.
Erik Stoxen, who was also making his season debut, rounded out the scoring for the Fighting Hawks in a tie for 39th with a 228 (+12).
North Dakota returns to action next week with the Throwdown Up Top event, hosted by South Dakota, in Homer, Neb.
