Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team defeated Marquette, 4-3, on Friday night in a back-and-forth match from the Elite Sports Club in Milwaukee, Wis.
The victory extends UND's winning streak to nine straight matches to begin the season, matching the program's Division I record set back in 2019-20 before that year was shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It's also the second straight win over the Golden Eagles in program history, notching a 6-1 defeat last season.
For the first time all season, North Dakota fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point following a pair of wins by the Golden Eagles on all three courts. The Fighting Hawks top pair of
Gerhard Sullwald and
Nikita Snezhko nearly remained unbeaten as a pair, but fell, 7-6, in a tiebreaker that ended with a 13-11 score.
Moving into singles action,
Edmond Aynedjian pulled the visitors even with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on the No. 3 court, but Marquette responded with a pair of wins at the sixth and second spots to grab a 3-1 lead and move within a clinch.
Sullwald remained perfect in singles play with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win on the top court to trim the lead down to just 3-2 and Snezhko pulled the match level at 3-3 with a three-set victory of his own on the No. 4 court by a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 score.
With all eyes on the No. 5 court,
Riley Odell dropped his first set, 6-2, before rallying from a 5-4 deficit and his opponent serving for the match to grab the second frame, 7-6, and force a tiebreaker. In the extra session, the junior notched a 6-4 triumph to seal the win and keep the Fighting Hawks perfect on the season.
North Dakota returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. against IUPUI from Milwaukee.
