PORTLAND, Ore. -- The University of North Dakota fell in a tight, 4-3, battle to Portland State on Wednesday afternoon from Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Portland, Ore. to begin a three-match week against former Big Sky Conference foes.
After the Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a pair of wins on the No. 2 and 3 courts in doubles action, the hosts stretched its lead to 3-0 and put the match in a clinching position with back-to-back victories from the second and third spots to begin singles action.
UND would begin to rally; however, with
Andrea Jansson getting the Fighting Hawks on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph on the No. 4 court before
Jule Schulte rallied from a tough first set to post two straight wins by a 6-2, 6-1 score from the fifth position to cut the lead to 3-2.
Nyah Kauders would eventually even the score at 3-3 at the top spot, trading 7-5 scores before claiming a 6-4 triumph in the tiebreaker set, but the Vikings would rally on the No. 6 court to hold off the late charge from the visitors and claim the 4-3 victory.
North Dakota will return to action on Friday afternoon against Idaho at 5:30 p.m. from Moscow.
