Drake holds off North Dakota, 5-2

Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Drake on Friday evening from the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa. 

UND drops to 15-6 overall and 2-2 in league play with one match remaining in the regular season. The Fighting Hawks remain in the final spot for the postseason, which takes the top-4 teams in the standings, and hold the tiebreaker over Oral Roberts and Illinois State. 

Drake, who entered the match ranked No. 70 in the latest ITA poll, jumped out to a 1-0 start with a pair of wins on the top and bottom courts of doubles play. The duo of Cian McDonnell and Edmond Aynedjian held a 5-3 lead at the middle spot when play was halted. 

The Bulldogs grabbed the first four victories in singles play to clinch the overall match triumph and a 5-0 lead, but the Fighting Hawks kept battling to earn a pair of points. Gerhard Sullwald notched the first win of the evening for the visitors on the No. 1 court by a 6-3, 6-4 score before Nikita Snezhko battled back from a 6-2 defeat in his first set to post a 7-5, 10-6 victory in the ensuing frames at the No. 4 position. 

North Dakota closes the regular season at home against Denver on Sunday, Apr. 16 at 10 a.m. from Choice Health and Fitness.
