TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team was honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as part of the organization's 2023 Division I Men's ITA Scholar-Athletes and All-Academic Teams, as announced on Tuesday.
Within the sport of tennis, student-athletes continue to exceed expectations in the classroom and on the court. In 2023, 959 Division I Men's student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and 162 men's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.
Four Fighting Hawks were honored as scholar-athletes, with
Petro Alex,
Edmond Aynedjian, Victor Moreno Lozano and
Jerall Yasin each earning the distinction. The four selections are the third-most by a Summit League men's tennis team and the most for the UND men's tennis program since moving to Division I.
As a team, North Dakota was also selected as an ITA All-Academic Team after finishing the 2022-23 academic year with a 3.280 GPA, also sitting as one of only three Summit League men's tennis programs to earn the honor.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
- Be listed on the institutional eligibility form
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
- All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
