Fighting Hawks Honored with Multiple ITA Academic Recognitions

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota men's and women's tennis programs secured a plethora of academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the organization's 2026 Division I ITA Men's & Women's Scholar-Athletes and Academic Teams.
 
A total of 13 Fighting Hawks between the men's and women's teams earned ITA Scholar-Athlete distinctions while each program also took home ITA All-Academic Team honors.
 
Individually, Walker Valentine, Darrshan Suresh Kumar, Leo Galliano, Kotaro Matsumura, Cole Wilber, Christos Alex and Justin Ilic were recognized for the men while Emma Roberts, Jule Schulte, Linn Svaerd, Alyssa Giupponi, Simone Cameron and Alva Norberg took homes honors for the women.
 
UND is one of only two schools in the Summit League to take home ITA All-Academic Team honors for both squads, joining only Denver.
 
The recognitions come after a season that resulted in Summit League Tennis Championship title match appearances for both programs. UND also secured two Summit League All-Academic honorees in Alex and Giupponi while totaling six All-League selections.
 
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
  • Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
  • Be listed on the institutional eligibility form
 
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
  • Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
  • All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
  • All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
