Fighting Hawks blow by Dragons, 2-0, for first victory of 2023

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team picked up its first win of the 2023 season, defeating MSU Moorhead, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon from a warm Bronson Field in Grand Forks, N.D.

Goals from Allison Rapaduski and Mary Gasaway in the second half proved to be the difference, while Madi Livingston notched her first shutout of the campaign and her 12th of her career to help the Fighting Hawks improve to 1-2-0 on the season.

Despite the scoreless half, it was a dominant territorial advantage for North Dakota, finishing the opening 45 minutes with a 12-0 shot advantage and forcing a pair of saves from the MSUM goalkeepers. NoDak thought they had the breakthrough in the first stanza, but the play was whistled for offside to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.

Gasaway also created multiple chances for herself and her teammates on throw-in attempts, with the junior curling one just over the bar in the 15th minute and creating back-to-back opportunities for Kaylie Fowler in the opening minutes of the contest.

UND kept up the offensive attack to begin the second half, once again looking like it had jumped in front before the offside flag came up once again just minutes into the final 45. The Hawks kept pushing towards goal, with another long throw by Gasaway falling to Brynn Belcher at the top of the box and forcing the MSUM goalkeeper to make a great save in the 51st minute.

The onslaught towards the goal continued for the hosts, with Rapaduski smashing a shot off the crossbar and Evelyn Pazienza's header off the rebound being turned aside by the keeper to preserve the 0-0 scoreline with just over 24 minutes to play in the contest.

Rapaduski find found the breakthrough for UND in the 70th minute, as the senior went nearly coast-to-coast and blistered a shot into the back of the net from just outside the 18-yard box to give her goals in back-to-back contests and a 1-0 lead for the hosts.

NoDak doubled the lead in the 81st minute on another strike off a set piece, with Gasaway connecting on a great corner from Julia Briggs that found the junior along the back post for her first strike of the season and some important insurance strike to help close out the 2-0 win.

North Dakota finishes a four-game homestand to begin the 2023 season against Austin Peay at 1 p.m. on Sunday from Bronson Field.
