Omaha clips North Dakota in conference opener, 2-0

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- On a sloppy and rainy day at Bronson Field, the University of North Dakota soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Omaha on Thursday afternoon in its conference opener in Grand Forks, N.D.

After a 75-minute delay due to lightning and rain in the area, both sides battled the elements and field conditions to establish possession and offensive opportunities. Madi Livingston made her first save of the game just past the nine minute mark with a great save diving to her right to keep the contest scoreless in the early going.

Omaha (4-3-2, 1-0-0 Summit League) took advantage in the 41st minute when a cross from Keara Chaffee deflected off a UND (4-5-2, 0-1-0 Summit League) defender and into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 Maverick lead heading into the halftime break.

It was NoDak who started to create some pressure as the second stanza began and nearly finding the equalizer as Mary Gasaway's header off a corner hit the post and stayed out to keep the visitors in front. Moments later, UNO increased its advantage with a goal from Sophia Green against the run of play to double the lead.

The Fighting Hawks kept pushing for a goal, striking the bar again on a great chance by Allison Rapaduski and forcing goaltender Emma Konsmo to make a trio of saves, but the Mavericks held on for the 2-0 win.

North Dakota will look to get back on track against Kansas City on Sunday at noon from Bronson Field.
