NOTES: Fighting Hawks Riding Momentum into Thursday Game at South Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota men's basketball team will travel to Vermillion to face South Dakota for the first time this season on Thursday night. The Fighting Hawks come into the game winners of four straight and sit tied for second place in the Summit League with a 4-3 league record, while the Coyotes have dropped three straight and sit last in the Summit League at 2-5 in conference games.

 

Scouting the Opponent

The Coyotes are led by coach Eric Peterson, who is in his second season as the team's head coach. He has a 21-32 record as the head coach at USD and a 73-47 record overall as a head coach, with two seasons spent as the head coach at Williston State College before his time in Vermillion.

The team is averaging 75.4 points per game, and allowing 77.8. From the floor the Yotes are shooting .445 and .359 from three point range. Kaleb Stewart leads the team with 15.6 points per game, while Lahat Thioune averages 13.6 and leads the team with 9.9 rebounds per game. Bostyn Holt also averages double-figures with 11 points per game and leads the team with 62 assists.

 

Living Downtown

Last season the team broke the program record for three pointers made in a single game with 18 against Kansas City, breaking the record set on December 14, 2021 against North Central University.

North Dakota has hit at least one triple in every game dating back to Mar. 1, 2018. The last time the Hawks did not make a three came on Feb. 24, 2018, when UND went 0-for-8 from downtown at Northern Colorado in a 79-66 loss. North Dakota has hit at least one three in each of the last 179 games played.

Last Season

North Dakota finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 13-20 record, a seven win improvement over 2021-22. The Fighting Hawks won their first Summit League Tournament game in three years with an 83-68 win over Denver in the first game of the tournament. The team won six of their last nine games, regular and postseason, last year.
