GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A loaded week at home inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center for North Dakota volleyball begins Tuesday night against longtime in-state rival North Dakota State. UND played just once last week falling in a tightly-contested three-set match at St. Thomas. The loss dropped the Hawks' overall record to two games back of .500 at 8-10 overall with a 1-6 mark in league play.
Against UST, UND suffered consecutive 28-26 losses in sets one and two. The losses in extra in each of the first two sets mark the eighth and ninth frames lost by the Hawks in extra this season in addition to the 14th and 15th lost sets decided by three points or less. Elizabeth Norris led with 20 assists and added six digs and a lone kill to become the first DI Hawk to register 1,700+ assists, 700+ digs, 500+ kills, 100+ blocks and 50+ service aces. Sophomore
Lauren Perugini finished with a team-high 13 kills at .282 and she added 11 digs for her fourth double double this season and sixth of her career. Junior
Izzie McCormick recorded 15 digs and
Maddy Hornyak added a dozen to move 110 away from 1,000 for her career. McCormick led with four service aces to become the eighth DI Hawk to reach 70 in a career in addition to moving into fifth place on the DI career list.
The Hawks move into the final full week of October at 1-6 in Summit League play. UND's match up with I-29 rival North Dakota State is the final action in the first round of league play. The Hawks open up the first of its final eight regular season tilts on Thursday at home against Omaha and then will rematch with St. Thomas on Saturday. The Hawks have matched their home-wins output from a season ago with five. A sixth win inside the Betty would give UND its most at home since winning seven in 2018.
The Hawks have won the opening set in nine of its 17 matches winning five of those contests in addition to earning three wins after dropping the opening set. In 71 total sets played this season, UND has won 33. Of the 38 sets that the Hawks have fallen in, NoDak has seen nine go extra and 15 decided by just three points or less. Overall, UND is -27 in kills (844-871), +10 in aces (102-92), +21 in digs (975-954) and +14.5 in blocks (150.5-136.0).
