BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota began its 2024-25 indoor season at the SDSU Holiday Open on Friday, with UND's throwers and distance runners taking part in the meet. On the opening day of NCAA track & field action, the Fighting Hawks captured four event titles, posted a pair of improvements to the UND top-10 lists and placed 17 times.
Ethan Thomas, competing in his first meet as a Fighting Hawk, won the title in the championship section of the shot put with a toss of 58-8 1/2 (17.89m). That mark came on his fourth throw in a UND uniform and not only won him the title, but also ranks as the No. 2 throw in the shot put in school history.
Towards the end of the meet, Thomas was also victorious in the weight throw with a mark of 54-2 3/4 (16.53m).
Kenna Curry won two of the four individual titles for UND. She won the first individual crown of the season for UND in the championship section of the weight throw with a mark of 70-6 1/2 (21.50m). Later in the meet, she was also victorious in the championship section of the shot put with a throw of 48-11 3/4 (14.93m).
Eve Goldstein was also in the championship section of the weight throw and was the first Fighting Hawk to post an improvement to the UND top-10 list, moving up to No. 8 in school history and finishing sixth with a throw of 59-9 3/4 (18.23m).
Earlier in the championship section of the women's shot put,
Julia Matthews placed fourth with a distance of 44-10 3/4 (13.68m).
During the regular section of the shot put,
Boaz Raderschadt took sixth with a mark of 48-0 3/4 (14.65m).
The first four Fighting Hawks to take the track all placed in the women's 5,000 meters.
Rachel Hughes was the runner-up with a personal-best time of 18:47.57.
Brianna Mullen took fifth in 18:55.38, trailed by
Gabrielle Wahl in sixth with a PR of 19:16.75 and
Jackie Dudus in eighth with a time of 19:51.81.
In the men's 5,000 meters,
Ethan Adams led NoDak and was fourth in 15:12.74.
Niko Angell finished seventh in 15:31.73, while
Ethan Kimmel placed eighth with a personal-best time of 15:42.73.
Micah Bruggeman was the runner-up in the mile, clocking a time of 4:20.15.
Morgan Hartze and
Maggie Dervis were the final Hawks to place on the track and took fourth (2:17.35) and fifth (2:17.58), respectively, in the 800 meters. The time of 2:17.58 was a PR for Dervis.
Select members of the UND distance squad will visit Boston on Saturday for the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener and the Early Bird at the TRACK at new balance.
