FARGO, N.D. – Maguire Petersen (heptathlon) and Yonca Kutluk (mile and 5,000 meters) both won gold medals and North Dakota added nine medals to its count on the final day of the Summit League Indoor Championships on Saturday. In total, the Fighting Hawks claimed six gold medals and 15 medals at the conference championships.

In the team standings, the Fighting Hawk women finished third with 120 points, while the UND men were fifth with 49 points. Both teams for North Dakota had a one-spot improvement from last season in the team standings.

Petersen earned All-Summit League status and won the gold medal in the heptathlon with a PR total of 5,421 points. With the win, Petersen became the first Summit League Indoor Champion in the heptathlon in school history. His personal-best point total also broke the school record of 5,339 points, which was set by Jack Vetsch at the 2021 Summit League Indoor Championships.

The 2024 heptathlon champion entered the day with the lead after recording three PR's in the four events on Friday to come into the day with a total of 3,206 points. He opened Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles and had another PR (8.49) to add 862 points to his total. After that, he cleared a personal-best height of 14-1 1/4 (4.30m) in the pole vault and had the third-best clearance of the competition to get 702 points. Going into the 1,000 meters, Petersen had a lead of 300 points. He finished the competition with a time of 3:01.37 for his final 651 points of the heptathlon.

In total, Petersen had PR's in five of the seven heptathlon events and finished with the top marks in the long jump, shot put and high jump, which allowed him to hold the top spot after the second event (long jump) and lead the rest of the way. Teammate Malene Kollberg claimed the pentathlon crown on Friday with 3,904 points, which allowed the Fighting Hawks to sweep both of the multi titles. Before this weekend, North Dakota had never swept both multi titles at a conference championship meet in school history.

Kutluk added two more gold medals to her name on Saturday. She started the afternoon in the mile and won the title with a PR of 4:46.72. With the PR, Kutluk not only won the title but also broke the school record of Becky Leppard, who set it at 4:49.35 at the NCAA Division II Championships in 2001.

Towards the end of the meet, Kutluk returned to the track and claimed the win in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:50.44. It was her third gold medal of the meet, also winning the 3,000 meter title on Friday night.

Teammates Eliana Malnourie and Jadyn Keeler were also in the 5,000 meters and scored points. Malnourie claimed the bronze medal and took third with a time of 17:11.62, while Keeler added a point to NoDak's total with an eighth-place finish in a time of 17:24.72.

In the men's 5,000 meters, Jamie Burns earned the bronze with a PR time of 14:25.36, moving him up to No. 2 in school history. Luke Labatte also placed and was fifth in 14:28.91.

Kenna Curry, who won the gold in the weight throw on Friday, returned on Saturday and gained a silver medal in the shot put with a toss of 50-6 (15.39m). Her toss tied her personal-best mark, which set the school record at the UND Open earlier this season.

Eve Goldstein also picked up All-Summit League honors in the shot put, finishing with the bronze medal with a toss of 47-6 1/2 (14.49m). Goldstein was seventh in the weight throw on Friday.

Julia Matthews was the final thrower to score points for UND, placing sixth in the shot put with a toss of 44-10 3/4 (13.68m). Matthews also added a point to North Dakota's total on Friday, taking eighth in the weight throw.

Justice Dick and Alec Nelson both picked up medals and All-Summit League accolades in the 800 meters. Dick was the runner-up and gained the silver medal with a time of 1:53.54, while Nelson finished third and got the bronze in 1:53.84.

Jerzie Finstad added three points to NoDak's total in the 400 meters and placed sixth with a time of 56.55.

Justina Esangbedo took sixth in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 39-7 1/4 (12.07m). Her jump broke the program record, which she set twice on Saturday. Esangbedo set the record for the first time on her second attempt of the afternoon with a leap of 38-5 1/2 (11.72m), which broke the record of Autumn Stokes, who set it at 38-5 (11.71m) at SDSU in 2019. Esangbedo then shattered the record with her PR leap of 39-7 1/4 (12.07m) on her fifth jump.

Claire Leach also made it to the finals of the triple jump and was ninth with a PR of 38-4 1/4 (11.69m), moving her up to No. 6 in school history.

In the final event on the track, the men's 4x400-meter relay team of P.K. Moore, Alec Nelson, Jory Vasek and Justice Dick clocked the sixth-fastest time in school history and placed sixth in 3:20.45.

The women's 4x400-meter squad of Kimberly Hitchen, Brooklyn Brouse, Courtney Werner and Finstad scored the final three points for the women, finishing sixth with a time of 3:58.92.

Lucas Schweigert, a recent addition from the UND football team, made it to the finals in the shot put but finished one spot shy of scoring. He took ninth with a personal-best throw of 46-0 (14.02m).

The top-16 student-athletes at the conclusion of all conference championships will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass., on March 8-9.
