North Dakota grabs huge conference win over Omaha, 4-3

Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team notched a huge, 4-3 win over Omaha in Summit League action on Saturday afternoon from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.

UND improves to 2-1 in league play with two matches remaining in the regular season. The top-4 teams in the standings will qualify for the Summit League Tennis Championships in mid April.

"When 3-hour college tennis matches come down to a few points, which they often do, it is usually the small details that make the difference in winning and losing," said UND head coach Tom Boysen. "I thought our team was very willing to take calculated and intelligent risks in the big moments today up and down the entire lineup. We had the attitude that we wanted to take the match rather than hope they gave it to us."

North Dakota got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 1-0 lead with a pair of doubles victories on the No. 1 and 2 courts. The top pairing of Kevin Ange-Koua and Victor Moreno Lozano opened it up with a 7-6 triumph before Leandro Zgraggen and Jerall Yasin closed out the strong start for the hosts by a 7-5 score.

"We have been saying for quite a while that good things were close to coming for us," said Boysen. "We've been knocking on the door, and today we kicked it in. "Omaha is a very good and talented team, and we should take some confidence from this win."

Jayho Hong extended the advantage to 2-0 early in singles action by a 6-3, 6-4 score from the No. 5 court and Yasin followed moments later with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at the bottom spot to push the lead to 3-0.

Omaha started to rally, trimming the deficit to 3-2 after back-to-back victories from the No. 1 and 3 courts, but Terry provided the clinch in three sets with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 win at the fourth position.

"So happy to be able to play this match at home at a great facility like Choice and in front of our awesome fans," said Boysen. "Glad we could get a big win in Victor's last home match as a Hawk."

North Dakota will hit the road for its final two matches of the regular season beginning on Sunday, March 31 in Denver at 11:30 a.m.
