Rookies pace UND at final day of HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational

SUGAR LAND, Texas -- The University of North Dakota closed out its first tournament of the championship portion of the 2023-24 season on Tuesday at the HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational from the Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas. 

As a team, North Dakota finished 14th out of 15 competing squads with a score of 881 (+17). The Fighting Hawks fired a 298 (+10) over the final 18 holes that saw only five teams finish with rounds below par on the day. New Mexico Junior College claimed the team title with an 847 (-17) while Houston's Jacob Borow, who was golfing unattached, won the individual crown with a 200 (-16). 

Rookies once again led the way for UND over the final day, with Joseph Kortan and Nathan Peyerl each finishing tied for 31st with a 216 final card to sit even for the tournament. The duo combined for 18 birdies over the three rounds to finish with their career-best score over 54 holes. 

Lucas Feterl matched his second round output on Tuesday with a 74 to finish tied for 54th with a 223 (+7), including an impressive birdie on the par-3 seventh, while Kagan Kollar and Grayson Wetch finished tied for 67th and 69th with a 227 (+11) and 228 (+12), respectively. Brandon McGarry tied for the best round of the day by a Fighting Hawk with a 73 (+1) to shave nine strokes off his score from the opening 18 and place tied for 72nd with a 229 (+13). 

North Dakota will return to action this weekend at the Jackrabbit Invitational beginning on Friday, March 8 from Boulder City, Nev.
