School records shattered at final round of Summit League Championships

SELLERSBURG, Ind. -- The University of North Dakota men's golf team finished its season in style on Tuesday afternoon at the Summit League Men's Golf Championships from Covered Bridge Golf Club from Sellersburg, Ind., shattering a pair of school records. 

As a team, UND shot a 276 (-12) over the final 18 holes, breaking the previous school record by eight strokes to tie for the second-lowest score of the day with North Dakota State. Overall, UND finished the championships with an overall team score of 863 (-1) to demolish the school record by a whopping 17 strokes and finish eighth. Kansas City captured the team crown with a 833 (-31) while KC's Mesa Falleur jumped up one spot to win the individual title with a 205 (-11). 

Grayson Wetch continued his strong tournament and put the finishing touches on a career-best performance, shooting a 68 (-4) over the final 18 holes to place 16th with a 213 (-3). The scores were a career-best for the Fargo, N.D., native, breaking his 54-hole personal best by three strokes and his 18-hole record by one. Wetch finished the round with only two bogeys while sinking a trio of birdies on both the front and back nines to record the second-highest finish by a UND player at the conference championships since moving to Division I. 

Brandon McGarry also closed out his season with a strong round, finishing with a 70 (-2) to climb back to even for the championships at 216 and sit tied for 24th overall. The senior surged to the finish line for the Fighting Hawks, hitting three birdies over his final five holes to get to -2. 

Lucas Feterl matched McGarry's round of 70 (-2) on the final day to shave five strokes off his score and climb into a tie for 32nd with a 219 (+3). The Maple Grove, Minn., native only recorded one bogey over his final 18 holes, tying for the fewest in a round by a UND player during the championships. 

Joseph Kortan also notched his best round of the week with a 73 (+1) thanks to a 35 (-1) on the back nine to place 37th at 222 (+6). Nathan Peyerl joined the lineup for the final round and did not disappoint, as the freshman turned in his best 18 holes of his young collegiate career with a 68 (-4) thanks to five birdies and just one bogey.
