Hawks bested by CSUN in final non-conference match

Offsides call negated UND’s goal that would have evened the action in the 52nd minute

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – North Dakota soccer closed out the non-conference portion of its 2024 schedule on Sunday night in California. The Hawks were bested by California State-Northridge 1-0 in the first meeting between the two programs. A Matador goal in the 15th minute proved the difference as UND moved to 4-4-2 overall with Summit League play coming up in a week and a half. CSUN improved to 2-6.

CSUN's Ashly Torres missed high right thanks to the paw of Hawks true freshman goalkeeper Grace Miller who showcased her defensive range lunging up and handing the rather deep attack away from the netting. However, the Matadors would find the scoreboard around a minute later as Yoshi Rubalcava scored low right for the night's first tally.

UND nearly tied it in the 52nd minute as sophomore Kaylie Fowler delivered a shot that was deflected by the Matador's Riley Liebsack off the crossbar and tapped into the back of the net by freshman Charlie Basinet, but after a goal check review it was deemed offsides by the Hawks.

Junior Paula Moreno Diaz just missed a free kick high in the 67th minute. A UND corner kick in the 72nd minute would prove unsuccessful as well against the heavily crowded box. In the final twenty seconds, a last chance, high and soft touch shot from sophomore Avery Toms was saved high center to keep the Matadors out front at the final horn.

UND stares down a well-deserved pause as its next action isn't until Thursday, September 26, when the Hawks take on Oral Roberts in Tulsa to open Summit League play. The conference opener can be viewed on the Summit League Network and live stats will be available at FightingHawks.com.
