GRAND FORKS, N.D. - No. 10/9 North Dakota will close out its non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday, hosting San Diego from the Pioneer Football League at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on Midco Sports. It will also be carried on the Fighting Hawks Radio Network with a pregame show starting at Noon.
The Fighting Hawks carry a 2-1 record after the 52-28 thrashing of Idaho State last weekend.
Bo Belquist led North Dakota with eight receptions for 165 yards and a touchdown. With his eight grabs, he broke the UND Division I record for receptions in a career and brought his total up to 224, passing Greg Hardin (2010-13), who hauled in 216 catches in his career.
Simon Romfo went 25-for-38 passing for 287 yards and a pair of scores, while the UND backfield rushed for 155 yards and four touchdowns, with each TD being scored by a different running back on the roster. The defense also played a large role in the win and forced four turnovers, highlighted by
Devin Hembry's 92-yard pick-six in the first quarter.
The Toreros come to Grand Forks with a 2-0 record after wins against Cal Poly (27-21) and Central Washington (26-7) to open the season. San Diego averages 192 yards through the air per game and 120.5 yards on the ground. Quarterback Grant Sergent enters the contest 34-for-55 passing for 384 yards and three scores. Ja'seem Reed is his top target with 10 grabs for 130 yards and a touchdown, while
Isaiah Smith paces the backfield with 28 rushes for 120 yards.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams and North Dakota holds a 17-8-1 record all-time against PFL foes. UND is 5-0 over Drake, 0-1 at Dayton, 11-6-1 in the series with St. Thomas and 1-1 against Valparaiso. The last PFL member to beat NoDak was Dayton, 40-0, on Nov. 13, 1941, in Ohio. Most recently, the Fighting Hawks played the Bulldogs of Drake in the 2023 season opener and ran away with that game, 55-7.
