DENVER, Colo. – The University of North Dakota soccer team put together a strong defensive performance on Sunday afternoon, playing to a 0-0 tie against Denver from University of Denver Soccer Stadium in Denver, Colo.
Despite the plus-90-degree temperatures, UND (4-4-4, 0-0-2 Summit League) held strong against the six-time defending league champion Pioneers (7-4-1, 1-0-1 Summit League) on the road to finish the weekend with two points in the Summit League standings.
The Fighting Hawks also recorded their second result in 10 tries against the Pioneers since the series began in 2018 and first in Denver. The green and white also held the Pios off the scoreboard for the first time in series history and notched the first clean sheet away from Grand Forks since Oct. 19, 2023 at St. Thomas.
Grace Miller turned in another strong performance between the pipes for UND, finishing with eight saves to record the first shutout of her career. The rookie finishes the weekend with 19 saves on 21 shots against in an unbeaten pair of contests to improve to 3-3-4 on the season.
North Dakota put together two of the best chances in the contest, blasting a shot off the crossbar in each half.
Sofia Desirello nearly gave the Hawks a 1-0 advantage in the 38
th minute, firing a shot from distance that bounced off the bar and landed harmlessly in the box to keep the game tied at the break.
Just moments into the second stanza,
Kaylie Fowler had her shot also ring the bar in the 55
th minute to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0. From there, Miller and the UND defense took over and held the Pios off the board to preserve the scoreless draw.
North Dakota will return home for an in-state showdown with North Dakota State on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. from Bronson Field.
