Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team capped off a 2-0 start to the regular season with a 4-3 win over Idaho on Saturday night from Moscow, Idaho.
"Every road match presents unique challenges, but the The Kibbie Dome is a huge home court advantage for Idaho," said Associate Head Coach
Kyle Anderson. "We started the season with a solid, although uneven, performance against Eastern Washington."
UND (2-0) captured the all-important doubles point for the second straight day, grabbing a trio of wins to notch a 1-0 lead. The bottom pairing of
Leo Galliano and
Andrew Hayduke II started it off with a 6-2 win before the top duo of
Leandro Zgraggen and
Ange-Kevin Koua cemented the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 triumph.
Ethan Terry and
Jerall Yasin capped off the perfect start for the visiting Fighting Hawks on the middle court with a 6-4 triumph.
"Today, we played a brilliant doubles point and our seniors at No. 1 and No. 2 had professional efforts to get us to three points," said Anderson.
Idaho (1-1) evened the match at 1-1 with the first singles win of the night on the No. 4 court, but Zgraggen answered back at the top spot with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph to restore the advantage for the visitors.
After a three set win for the Vandals at the No. 3 position to bring the score back level at 2-2, Koua put the visitors back in front with a 7-6, 7-5 win on the No. 2 court before the hosts responded once again at the No. 6 position to bring the match even at 3-3.
With the contest deadlocked at 3-3, Terry rallied from a 3-6, 2-5 deficit to win 11 straight games and complete the win for the visitors by a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 score on the No. 4 court to push the Fighting Hawks to a 2-0 start with the 4-3 win.
"Huge congrats to Ethan for being on the brink of defeat before completing a remarkable comeback to clinch the win for us," said Anderson.
North Dakota hits the road next weekend for another pair of matches with former Big Sky Conference foes, opening with Montana on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. in Missoula.
